Wellness
Exams

At Polk Street Animal Hospital we believe in proactive disease prevention rather than taking a “wait and see” approach. We offer comprehensive exams for general wellness or sick pets. When your pet is examined by one of our veterinarians they will receive a complete nose to tail evaluation. We will listen to your concerns and make specific recommendations based on your pet’s individual needs.

 Types of Preventative Wellness Visits

Puppy & Kitten Consult

Your new puppy & kitten may have received some treatment & vaccines from their breeder or shelter, however most require further booster vaccinations & fecal tests. Typically Puppies & Kittens require 3 - 4 sets of booster vaccinations in their first 4 months to ensure sufficient immunity to common &  potentially fatal diseases such as Canine Parvo Virus and Panleukopenia. The county of San Francisco also requires by law that all dogs be up to date with their Rabies Vaccines from 16 weeks of age. Regular fecal testing is also recommended in young kittens & puppies, as they are particularly vulnerable to gastrointestinal parasites while their immune system is immature. We recommend bringing a fresh fecal sample to all puppy & kitten visits at Polk Street Animal Hospital.

New Pet Consult

New pet visits are important to establish a baseline health status for any individual dog or cat. At Polk Street Animal Hospital we strongly recommend bringing along, or emailing in advance, a copy of any paperwork you have for your new pet for our Veterinarian to review. Our Veterinarian will perform a full head-to-tail evaluation of your new pet & discuss with you any health concerns or recommendations they may have. They will also be able to ensure that your pet is current on their vaccinations.

Dental Consult

Does your cat or dog have smelly breath? At Polk Street Animal Hospital our Dental Consults allow the Veterinarian to evaluate the oral health status of your pet. Oral & Dental disease has major implications for your dog or cats overall health. Regardless of how proactive (or inactive) you are with teeth brushing & maintaining your pets oral health, most dogs & cats require some level of professional dental work during their life time. Our veterinarian will make recommendations based on their findings in your Dental Consult to treat or prevent any periodontal or other disease and ensure your pet stays healthy.

Annual Wellness Consult

An Annual wellness examination is a complete physical examination that may include diagnostic testing such as blood work, heartworm testing, urinalysis, and checking a stool sample for parasites if there is an indication to do so. In many cases, a wellness examination can help detect the early stages of disease and is also an opportunity to booster any vaccinations or refill or reassess any prescriptions. Please note that all pets must have been seen by a Veterinarian at Polk Street Animal Hospital within the past 12 months for us to renew prescriptions or dispense medication.

Senior Patient Consult

Thanks to better care, pets are living longer now than they ever have before – but as pets get older, they need extra care and attention. Regular veterinary examinations can detect problems in older pets before they become advanced or life-threatening, and improve the chances of a longer and healthier life for your pet. While it’s easy to spot the outward signs of aging such as graying haircoat and slower pace, it’s important to remember a pet’s organ systems are also changing. An older pet is more likely to develop diseases such as heart, kidney and liver disease, cancer or arthritis. Our Veterinarian will discuss how to manage these changes & make recommendations based on their physical exam of your dog or cat.

Ongoing Disease Monitoring Consult

If your pet is diagnosed with an acute or life long disease or illness our Veterinarian will work closely with you to establish a treatment plan that often includes regular monitoring. This may involve regular blood or urine tests, blood pressure checks & weight monitoring to ensure treatment & management is effective.
